Barry's Dynamite Show!
About the show:
"The way I see it, Barry, this should be a very dynamite show." These immortal words by Spider introducing side one of Frank Zappa's debut solo album, Lumpy Gravy, have resonated with me for decades. And yet, they have also haunted me. Where was MY dynamite show? Well thanks to WTF for allowing me to answer that question.
I'm Barry, and Barry's Dynamite Show is radio free from the confining formats and genres of terrestrial radio. Think of it as extra-terrestrial radio. I miss the days of true underground FM radio when the deejays were allowed to hand-pick their music, taking their prized private collections into the station in their 12 inch canvas tote bags & wooden crates, to share with those denizens of the FM bands lucky enough to have found a frequency to explore other music. I worked in record stores and was probably seen as one of those jaded clerks as seen in the film High Fidelity. I hired more than a few radio types who were forced to work part time in the record stores to supplement their meager radio income and to get the employee discount on vinyl treasures. (I even married one.)
Barry's Dynamite Show lets me go out on a whim each week. I don't know what direction I'll go with each show, but I hope it will be an audio journey that you'll enjoy tagging along for the ride. Sometimes it may just be me trying to exorcise an earworm, but mostly it will be songs that were overlooked and deserve to be heard again or for the first time. (Fair warning, you may hear the occasional outsider and eccentric music, such as Esquivel, Bingo Gazingo, Raymond Scott, and the like.)
You can follow Barry's Dynamite Show on Facebook to see what went down, and what's coming up.
Thanks WTF for giving me this opportunity, and I hope you enjoy Barry's Dynamite Show!
